Have you ever seen the Grand Canyon? How about the Sistine Chapel? These two things have one very important thing in common, they were both created thru the power of Persistent Action. One thru the vast generational persistence of nature and the other thru the persistence of human effort over the course of many years. They say that the journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step, which is very true, but the journey is never completed without continuing to take the many thousands of steps along the way, one by one by one. As I reflect today at my home upon my faith, family, friends, community, and business I am amazed at the consistent thread of greatness that the blessing of persistence has been to us all.
On Sunday, I was with our family at the YMCA swimming pool. My oldest daughter Malibu has been learning to swim. She would leave the side of the pool and swim over to me and then swim back to the side of the pool and making great progress at becoming a stronger swimmer. I then challenged her to swim all the way across the pool. She said, that’s too far daddy. I said just keep swimming and going forward and eventually you will reach the other side. The first couple of attempts she panicked somewhere along the way and I would assist her. On the last try, about 15 tries in at this point, she kept swimming, kept swimming, kept swimming, and reached the other side! The smile on her face was priceless, as she said proudly, “I did it Daddy, I did it! I did not give up and I made it Daddy!” What if she had quit after the first try or the 9th or the 14th? She would have never have made it. Would it have been easier for her in the moment? Of course! Would it have been easier for her long run, no way!
So often in this day and age, society wants the quick fix, the cliff notes version, the short cut, etc. and it is at a time like this that Persistence has an even greater more lasting and sustaining power. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “It always seems IMPOSSIBLE, until it’s DONE.” Let’s take this thought with us as we dream big and press forward towards the mark this week with steady—sometimes barely noticeable—PERSISTENCE.
